Chicken Xacuti

Chicken Xacuti (pronounced as Sha-Koo-Ti) is a typical Goan chicken curry cooked in coconut paste. It is very a easy to prepare and delicious dish. Coconut and all the spices together give a unique flavour to this dish. The same ingredients and method can be used to make Prawns Xacuti. Only the cooking time will vary.

Ingredients

  • Red chilli dried 2
  • Kashmiri chilli dried 3
  • Ajwain (Carom seeds) ½ teaspoon
  • Cumin seeds 1 teaspoon
  • Star anise 3
  • Cloves 5
  • Cinnamon stick 1 inch
  • Coriander seeds 1 tablespoon
  • Fennel seeds 1 teaspoon
  • Poppy seeds 1 teaspoon
  • Peppercorns 5
  • Desiccated / Fresh coconut grated ½ cup
  • Chicken skinless curry pieces 600 grams
  • Onion finely chopped 2
  • Garlic cloves 4
  • Ginger 1 inch
  • Nutmeg powder ½ teaspoon
  • Turmeric powder ½ teaspoon
  • Tamarind pulp ½ tablespoon
  • Oil 3 tablepoons
  • Salt to taste
  • Coriander chopped for garnish

Instructions

  • Marinate chicken by applying ¼ teaspoon of turmeric and ½ teaspoon of salt and keep aside.
  • Dry roast the coconut till golden brown. Keep aside.
  • Dry roast all the whole dry spices till you get nice aroma. Roast them on a low flame approx. 2-3 minutes.
  • Grind garlic, ginger and roasted coconut and roasted spice mix into a fine paste by adding little water.
  • Heat oil in a pan and add onion and fry till soft. Add turmeric powder and the paste and fry on medium heat for about 3-4 minutes.
  • Then, add marinated chicken pieces and fry for further about 3 minutes.
  • Add salt, nutmeg powder, tamarind pulp, 1½ cups of water and mix well. Bring it to boil.
  • Cover the saucepan, reduce heat to medium. Cook for about 15-20 minutes till the chicken is fully cooked.
  • Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or chapati.
