Chicken Xacuti (pronounced as Sha-Koo-Ti) is a typical Goan chicken curry cooked in coconut paste. It is very a easy to prepare and delicious dish. Coconut and all the spices together give a unique flavour to this dish. The same ingredients and method can be used to make Prawns Xacuti. Only the cooking time will vary.
Ingredients
- Red chilli dried 2
- Kashmiri chilli dried 3
- Ajwain (Carom seeds) ½ teaspoon
- Cumin seeds 1 teaspoon
- Star anise 3
- Cloves 5
- Cinnamon stick 1 inch
- Coriander seeds 1 tablespoon
- Fennel seeds 1 teaspoon
- Poppy seeds 1 teaspoon
- Peppercorns 5
- Desiccated / Fresh coconut grated ½ cup
- Chicken skinless curry pieces 600 grams
- Onion finely chopped 2
- Garlic cloves 4
- Ginger 1 inch
- Nutmeg powder ½ teaspoon
- Turmeric powder ½ teaspoon
- Tamarind pulp ½ tablespoon
- Oil 3 tablepoons
- Salt to taste
- Coriander chopped for garnish
Instructions
- Marinate chicken by applying ¼ teaspoon of turmeric and ½ teaspoon of salt and keep aside.
- Dry roast the coconut till golden brown. Keep aside.
- Dry roast all the whole dry spices till you get nice aroma. Roast them on a low flame approx. 2-3 minutes.
- Grind garlic, ginger and roasted coconut and roasted spice mix into a fine paste by adding little water.
- Heat oil in a pan and add onion and fry till soft. Add turmeric powder and the paste and fry on medium heat for about 3-4 minutes.
- Then, add marinated chicken pieces and fry for further about 3 minutes.
- Add salt, nutmeg powder, tamarind pulp, 1½ cups of water and mix well. Bring it to boil.
- Cover the saucepan, reduce heat to medium. Cook for about 15-20 minutes till the chicken is fully cooked.
- Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or chapati.
